What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a specific cosmetic surgical procedure that reduces and reshapes the labia minora. It is highly individualized, and Dr. Sauerhammer discusses various options with each patient to define the best approach for their unique anatomy and desired outcome. The overall purpose is to create a more balanced, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing contour.

Addressing Daily Discomfort

What Conditions Does Labiaplasty Address?

Labiaplasty is designed to address both physical and emotional concerns related to the size or shape of the labia minora. These common conditions include:

Chronic Physical Discomfort

Excessive labial tissue that leads to chafing, irritation, or pain during exercise, cycling, or sexual intimacy.

Aesthetic Self-Consciousness

Feeling uncomfortable or self-conscious about the appearance of the labia, especially in fitted clothing, swimwear, or during intimacy.

Symmetry Issues

Significant asymmetry or unevenness between the left and right sides of the labia minora.

Tissue Protrusion

Labial tissue that protrudes uncomfortably or is visible in certain clothing.

Understanding the Surgical Techniques

What Is the Labiaplasty Procedure Like?

Labiaplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in our AAAHC-certified surgical suite in Appleton, allowing you to return home the same day. Dr. Sauerhammer will guide you through your anesthesia options, often using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

The technique used is determined during your consultation. Common labiaplasty methods include:

  • The trim method removes excess tissue along the edge of the labia (most common)
  • The wedge method removes a V-shaped section from the center of the labia while preserving the natural edge

Dr. Sauerhammer then removes and reshapes the excess tissue. The incisions are closed with fine, dissolvable sutures, resulting in minimal visible scarring and a soft, natural appearance.

Refining Function and Form

What Areas of the Body Can Labiaplasty Address?

Labiaplasty specifically addresses the labia minora, the inner folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening, to improve both function and contour.

Comfort and Confidence

What are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?

Surgery can be an excellent option for relieving discomfort in the labial skin and achieving the appearance you want. Some of the benefits include:

Reduced irritation. Women may feel chafing or pinching from friction. This can be a particular problem when exercising or wearing tight clothing. Surgery reduces the labial skin to help Appleton and Green Bay patients resolve these problems.

Better symmetry. If one of the labia is larger or longer than the other, Dr. Sauerhammer can bring these features into greater harmony. She is highly focused on symmetry and spends the time necessary in each surgery to achieve this goal.

A more compact appearance. People tend to associate this type of aesthetic with attractiveness and youth. A labiaplasty reduces the size of the labia and reshapes them in a natural-looking way.

Post-Procedure Care For Optimal Results

What Is the Recovery from Labiaplasty Like?

One of the most common questions that Appleton and Green Bay patients ask during their consultation is what they can expect during their recovery. As a woman, mother, and surgeon, Dr. Sauerhammer has particular insight into the experience of recovery after labiaplasty.

Dr. Sauerhammer will perform your labiaplasty under general anesthesia and apply a long-lasting local anesthetic to help with post-operative discomfort. Applying ice to the area and taking the prescribed medications should help with discomfort after your surgery.

Most of our patients describe the recovery as similar to their recuperation after having a baby.

Expect to take 6 weeks to heal, with greater soreness in the first 3 days and gradual improvement in each subsequent week. Swelling should subside within one month. Patients can resume having sex after the six-week recovery.

The Lifelong Value of Comfort and Confidence

Labiaplasty Results

Patients begin to see the difference in contour and experience relief from physical discomfort almost immediately after initial post-op swelling subsides. Final results are typically visible after 6 weeks, though minor residual swelling may take a few months to fully resolve. The results of labiaplasty are considered permanent, and the improved shape will last indefinitely. The result is a refined contour and restored comfort and confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions Labiaplasty

The procedure itself is performed under anesthesia, ensuring you feel no pain. During recovery, most patients report manageable discomfort, which is typically well controlled with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication for the first few days.

Dr. Sauerhammer performs the surgery with techniques designed to preserve and protect nerve sensation. Labiaplasty is widely considered a safe procedure that does not negatively impact sexual function or pleasure; in fact, many patients report an improvement in comfort and confidence during intimacy.

The trim technique removes excess tissue along the outer edge of the labia, providing a clean, linear reduction. The wedge technique removes a central "V" section and preserves the natural, dark-crenulated edge of the labia. The choice depends entirely on your anatomy and aesthetic goals. Dr. Sauerhammer will guide you through the pros and cons of each method during your consultation.

Labiaplasty is primarily considered a cosmetic procedure and is generally not covered by insurance. However, if the enlargement is causing significant, documented physical distress, some portions may be covered. We recommend checking with your insurance provider. We will provide you with a clear cost estimate during your consultation.
