As we grow older, our bodies begin exhibiting signs of age. Many of these signs are most prominent on the face and include wrinkles, creases, and lines. Microneedling is a process that taps into the body’s innate healing capabilities, reversing these signs of age and providing a clearer, more youthful countenance.

At the Wisconsin Institute of Plastic Surgery, we are happy to provide patients with access to safe and effective anti-aging treatments, including microneedling with PRP.

What is Microneedling with PRP?

During a typical microneedling session, your provider will use needles, often positioned on a roller, to prick the skin and create micro-injuries. These tiny injuries signal to the body that new collagen is needed, prompting a natural rejuvenation effect.

Microneedling is a safe and effective way to revitalize the skin and reverse signs of the aging process, and it can be even more effective when paired with platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. PRP is extracted from your body via a normal blood draw, purified, then microneedled back into the skin at the site of the microneedling treatment. The addition of PRP further taps into your body’s innate healing ability, not only producing better results but also minimizing pain or swelling after the treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling with PRP is a popular anti-aging treatment, offering a number of unique benefits. Some examples include:

  • Microneedling provides natural-looking results, reversing signs of the aging process by tapping into the body’s innate healing capabilities.
  • With the addition of PRP, results tend to be visible more quickly.
  • PRP also ensures a smoother recovery process, minimizing pain and swelling.
  • Microneedling with PRP does not require surgery, anesthesia, or extended down time.

Meet Our Team

At the Wisconsin Institute of Plastic Surgery, our dermatology physician assistants, Colleen Van Egeren, PA-C and Megan MacCarthy, PA-C, have 34 years of combined experience treating various skin conditions. As dermatology specialists, they would love to talk with you about your needs and recommend a skincare treatment program just for you.

What Conditions Does Microneedling with PRP Treat?

Because it stimulates collagen production, restoring your skin tissue, microneedling with PRP can be an effective way to treat any number of conditions. Some of the main reasons why patients seek microneedling with PRP include:

  • Wrinkles, fine lines, and creases
  • Unevenness of skin tone
  • Dull, lifeless complexion
  • Acne scars
  • Hyperpigmentation

While microneedling with PRP is an excellent option for some patients, it is not for everyone. We do not recommend this procedure to patients who have active acne outbreaks or other ongoing skin diseases. We would also recommend abstaining from this treatment if you are pregnant or typically have poor wound healing.

How is This Different from Regular Microneedling?

The addition of PRP is an essential part of this process, providing an altogether more effective treatment than regular microneedling.

PRP naturally enhances the healing process, which means that results are visible more quickly and that redness and swelling do not last as long. Additionally, many patients experience better results when PRP is used, particularly patients who use microneedling to minimize acne scars.

What to Expect During Your Appointment?

If you have never had microneedling performed, you may have some questions about the procedure itself. Here is a rough outline of what you can expect when seeking treatment at the Wisconsin Institute of Plastic Surgery.

Before your treatment begins, we will carefully cleanse your skin, then apply a topical numbing agent. This ensures that you do not feel any pain or discomfort even as the microneedling experience creates tiny injuries.

The PRP is collected via a simple blood draw, typically from your arm. This is no different from getting blood work as part of a regular medical examination. The microneedling is performed with an FDA-approved roller or device, after which the PRP may be massaged into the treated area. In total, the microneedling experience should last no more than 30 minutes or so.

Once the treatment is complete, your provider may apply a balm to help ensure your comfort, soothing your skin even as the tiny injuries begin to heal. You will also be able to apply makeup to conceal the immediate after-effects of the microneedling, which can include some mild to moderate redness.

What To Expect During Recovery?

Recovery from microneedling with PRP is usually very straightforward. Most patients feel ready to return to work or resume their other normal activities the day after treatment. We recommend that patients avoid strenuous exercise or anything else that may cause profuse sweating for around 72 hours.

You may experience some redness and mild swelling, symptoms that will subside within a matter of days. You can conceal these effects with makeup. Avoid using any facial products that may be abrasive or irritating to the skin.
