Beauty and confidence manifest in many ways, including how a woman smiles, talks, her attitude, and of course, in her body and how she presents herself.  As it relates to representations of womanhood, having full, proportionate, and well-positioned breasts have long been a symbol. However, these attributes are not natural to every woman—and sometimes surgical enhancement is desired.

Procedure Explained

As one of the most popular procedures performed by Dr. Sauerhammer at the Wisconsin Institute of Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is also one of the first forms of plastic surgery that most women ever experience. As such, it is important to know exactly what is involved in the surgery as well as its benefits, who is a candidate, average cost, and more.

Formally known as “augmentation mammoplasty,” breast augmentation helps women increase their breast size.  The procedure involves placing either saline or silicone implants under chest muscles or breast tissue.

Some women pursue breast augmentation to change their appearance or improve their confidence. At the same time, other women are interested because they have found that their breasts’ current size is not ideal. Others still might choose breast augmentation to regain breast fullness and add volume.

Benefits

Breast augmentation offers many benefits, including:

  • You can add volume and curves. If your breasts are naturally small, and you desire a curvy physique, breast augmentation will add volume, which can help you fill out a bathing suit, wear a bra with a bigger cup size, show curves in normal clothing, and provide renewed self-confidence.
  • You can rejuvenate your breasts following pregnancy or combat aging. Pregnancy and age take a toll, and as time passes or children are born, your breasts might begin to appear deflated or show a decrease in volume. Breast augmentation can revitalize your appearance, adding size and volume, and helping you look more youthful.
  • You can even out asymmetrical breasts. Sometimes, breasts are different sizes, which can make it hard to shop for undergarments, bathing suits, and clothing. With breast augmentation, you can improve symmetry and ensure both breasts are equal while also increasing your breast size.

Process

Once you have undergone a consultation and decided that breast augmentation is right for you, you can expect your surgery to be done at our practice on an outpatient basis, meaning you will go home the same day as your surgery.

Most breast augmentations are administered under general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will make a single incision either in the crease under your breast, under your arm, or around the nipple. Breast tissue will be separated from muscles and connective tissue, creating a pocket where the implant will be inserted and positioned behind the nipple.

Once the implant is in place, the incision will be closed with stitches or sutures, and the breasts will be bandaged.

Recovery

After the surgery is over, it is normal to feel sore and experience swelling and bruising in the first few weeks.  Additionally, as you heal, your scars will begin to fade, but you may still see evidence of the surgery itself on your skin.

It will be necessary to wear a compression bandage or bra during recovery as this will provide the support you need while also ensuring your breasts remain in the right position. Take note to follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions here because if the compression garment is abandoned too early, your results could be impacted.

Follow your surgeon’s guidance on when it is safe to return to work and regular activities. Remember that your breasts will be sensitive to physical activity, so you want to be certain you are clear to resume exercise or strenuous labor if your job is taxing.

You are encouraged to reach out to your plastic surgeon if you notice warmth, redness, abnormal swelling, or have a fever. These are all signs of infection, and you will need to seek treatment.
