Every woman wants to feel confident and beautiful during an intimate experience with a partner—and they certainly do not want to deal with chronic infections or irritation of labial skin. When aesthetic issues and discomfort are experienced regarding the labia, it can truly impact the quality and happiness of your life.  But labiaplasty can help.

Labiaplasty is often pursued by women who have large labia minora—the inner vaginal lips—and who might have a condition called labia minor hypertrophy. This condition can be genetic, or it could be the result of weight loss, childbirth, and aging.  If the inner lips of the vagina droop below the labia majora, the skin can become irritated, and discomfort can be experienced during sexual intercourse and physical activities, including walking and running.  Labiaplasty is a highly personal choice for any woman—but it is a choice that can greatly improve your life and wellness.

Procedure Explained

Labiaplasty encompasses a couple of techniques, including the trim procedure and the wedge procedure. In the former, which is most widely used, the excess portion of the labia minora is removed and sutured. The desired result is to achieve symmetry with the labia majora.

Regarding the wedge procedure, a partial thickness wedge is removed from the thickest part of the labia minora. This procedure allows the vagina to preserve wrinkled edges and retain a natural look.

Benefits

There are myriad benefits associated with labiaplasty.  If you suffer from chronic irritation and discomfort, or if you wish to improve body aesthetics, know that labiaplasty offers these benefits:

  • Relief of pain associated with chafing or catching on clothing
  • Eliminate irritation experienced during sex, exercise, and physical activities
  • Realize a symmetrical labia
  • Enhance self-confidence after childbirth
  • Reduce the size of the labia
  • Rejuvenate the labia and eliminate sagging related to age or weight loss

If these benefits excite you, reach out to your local board-certified plastic surgeon for a one-on-one consultation regarding your aesthetic vision for your labia.

Process

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under the use of general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep and therefore experience minimal discomfort.

Once the procedure is complete, you will be allowed to wake up and let the general anesthesia wear off. A long-lasting local anesthetic will be applied to help you deal with post-operative discomfort, and you will also likely be prescribed pain medication and an antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection.

Recovery

Once you are awake and are no longer feeling the effects of the anesthesia, you will be allowed to go home. Know that you will need someone to drive you home and help you for a few days following your procedure with daily responsibilities around the house and childcare.

Many women describe recovering from labiaplasty as similar to how it feels after you have a baby. It will take, in full, about six weeks to heal, although you should start feeling a bit back to normal after a week or two. You should be able to return to work and other activities at that time.

However, sexual intercourse and other strenuous physical activity should be delayed for at least a full six weeks. In order to know what goes into the full recovery process, ensure you consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
